Ultra Music Festival is the largest electronic dance music festival in the world and has. in many ways, revolutionized the music industry by creating a space for electronic dance music fans that is centered around a live experience. In an era when record sales are falling across the board, Ultra Music Festival is one of the few music festivals that has continued to see growth year after year. This is because Ultra Music Festival is not just any other music festival – it’s an experience and when you are part of it, you become a part of something bigger than yourself.
Ultra Music Festival turns 15 this year and celebrates its milestone with multiple international locations over three weekends across two continents. In the past few years, Ultra Music Festival has traveled to countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the United States.
You have probably heard of Ultra Music Festival before, but you might not know that it was started by a group of friends who just wanted to bring their favorite electronic dance music DJs to South Florida. Back then there were only a few electronic dance music DJs that could fill up Miami’s Bayfront Park on New Year’s Eve. But the atmosphere of Miami Beach was different back then and so was the atmosphere at Bayfront Park. Sure, you had a couple parties down by South Beach every weekend and there were some rave-style dance clubs around town as well. But Bayfront Park, especially at the end of the year, was a space for all different kinds of people to gather and enjoy themselves.
But even with all the rave-rooms that exist in Miami today, I believe that it is still difficult for anyone who wants to get into the scene to actually enjoy that space. All you have to do is look online and see all of the rage against ravers and rave culture.
But back then it was different. A lot of people liked dancing on New Year’s Eve or at special events like Ultra Beach Weekends (aka UBOW) if they liked electronic dance music in general. And besides, the distance between South Beach and Bayfront Park is very small in Miami. So it was only natural that in 1997, the group behind Ultra Music Festival decided to take their idea for a New Year’s Eve event and make it a massive event that lasts all weekend long.
But this set the stage for a problem that would soon be recognized by many other festivals as well – e.g., Ultra as we know it today simply cannot happen without sponsorship. This is because of one key fact – electronic dance music fans are not keen on buying expensive tickets directly to cover the costs of staging an event like Ultra Music Festival (or any festival for that matter). Rather, they want to go and enjoy the music and experience that electronic dance music festivals offer.
The fact is, electronic dance music fans do not want to buy tickets for a singular event but rather want to buy tickets for an entire festival that offers them great entertainment across the weekend. And since Ultra Music Festival is one of the very few festivals that has continued to grow year after year, it’s easy for them to charge more for each ticket due to the popularity of their event.
Ultra Music Festival team knows that if they are to keep this up, they will eventually have to stop relying on local and international fans buying passes to a single event in order to sustain their business. So, now they take advantage of this sponsorship by getting a host of brands and organizations involved with their festival.
Because what is an electronic dance music festival without sponsors? Without these sponsorships, someone would have to cover the expense of booking, transporting and entertaining the DJs – something that Ultra Music Festival does not want to do on its own. However, Ultra Music Festival does all of these things because it is hosting a massive celebration for their fans.
So, maybe that’s the reason why Ultra Music Festival has been able to continue growing in size year after year. And while they are still playing a lot of the same DJs from last year’s lineup there are still new faces and names that come to different countries with their own sets and remixes.
Ultra Music Festival isn’t just about having a big line-up for these big names, but it is also about building the scene around them so that fans have something to look forward to throughout the weekend. Because after all, you don’t have to buy tickets for any one particular show at Ultra Music Festival in order to enjoy it – you can experience everything it has to offer from any location.
